Presence/Absense, Maria Kheirkah, 2005

Part of the Troika series, Absence/Presence looked at representations of status and patronage in the National Gallery collections within the context of young people’s heritage in east London’s richly diverse communities. Lead artist Maria Khierkah investigated notions of identity with a core group of participants, to create installation and photographic pieces with support from artists Uli Schade and Evon Gregory. The resulting photographic images re-appropriated paintings in the collections.

The National Theatre’s Costume Department provided historical garments for photographic reconstructions, and the final works were exhibited at the Lyttleton Space in the National Theatre, Southbank.
