This includes work with museums, galleries and local authority arts provision to measure the impact of creative and cultural pilots, engagement programmes and events. I prefer a light-touch approach to evaluation, gathering feedback and data through participant-focused means, and supporting project teams to make necessary adjustments as their initiatives evolve. Examples include:

  • Arabian Nights, 2010: Arabian Nights is the V&A Museum’s annual Arab World festival, designed to employ art & design as inspiration to increase appreciation of Arabic and Islamic cultures and foster cultural understanding. Supported by the Saïd Foundation, the festival incorporates a range of family learning activities, including film, digital media, drawing, music and story-telling. Commissioned to carry out external evaluation of the 2010 event.

  • Build Your Own Politician, 2005: A pilot was devised by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Electoral Services Department, to explore young people’s perceptions of politicians and to openly consider the barriers that may prevent young people from becoming politically engaged. Commissioned to evaluate the project.   • digital pioneers, 2008-9: As part of Create Futures research programme at the V&A Museum, Digital Pioneers aimed to nurture the creativity and talent of young people from NS-SEC groups 5-8. Working with industry mentors, young people developed skills in creative new media industries through a package of tailored support. Commissioned to advise the project team and evaluate the pilot. Guidance for organisations developing new programmes and creative initiatives for children and young people. Examples include: 

  • Create Voice is the youth advisory forum for the Victoria & Albert Museum, initiated as a seven-month pilot from January to July 2009. With support from the Wates Foundation, the forum was established to explore ways to increase the role that young people play in shaping youth programming, with the aim of expanding its scope to broader audience development across the Museum.   • en-vision came about as a result of significant research reports highlighting young people’s lack of involvement in cultural activity and the lack of meaningful opportunities for young people in galleries. The 2-year en-vision pilot incorporated a series of action-research projects by arts and youth organisations across 8 venues in the West Midlands, East Midlands and the North West. The pilot also incorporated training, networking and advocacy activities, and a toolkit was produced based on the programme findings. To view the toolkit for en-vision pilot click here.
